Van Driver Airlifted To Hospital After Serious Collision With Lorry On A272

A van driver has been airlifted to hospital after a serious collision on the A272, shortly before 9am this morning (Tuesday).

Two crews of firefighters were called to the scene between Cowfold and Buckbarn Crossroads, at around 8.55am.

Police said a 22-year-old man who was driving the van sustained serious injuries after colliding with a lorry.

The lorry driver was taken to hospital by road with minor injuries.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the Technical Rescue Unit and heavy rescue tender were also at the scene.

SECAmb, police and The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) also responded to the collision.

The road is expected to be closed for some time.

A spokesperson from SECAmb said:

"I can confirm we were called shortly before 9am today to reports of an RTC on the A272 between Buxham and Cowfold.

"Ambulance crews attended alongwith the air ambulance service.

"Two patients have been taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

"One patient was taken by road and one patient, with more serious injuries, was airlifted to hospital."

A spokesperson from Sussex Police said:

"We are investigating the circumstances of this collision and are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened or may have dash-cam footage of either of the vehicles."
