A search operation is continuing this morning (July 19) for a swimmer who went missing at a reservoir in Sussex on Sunday.

Police and other rescue services have been searching Ardingly Reservoir, and nearby land, since a report about a missing person was received around 6.10pm on July 18.

Teams are looking for a man aged 49, who had gone out with friends for a swim that afternoon.

Officers said they carried out 'extensive' searches on Sunday, with the assistance of the National Police Air Service helicopter.

Their operation is continuing today, they added.

Ardingly Reservoir is owned by South East Water, and feeds the River Ouse in West Sussex from its location north of Haywards Heath.

It hosts a number of permitted leisure activities, but swimming is generally not among them.

Last summer, security guards were on duty to stop swimmers who, the water company said, were risking their lives.
