Military personnel from 12th and 16th Royal Artillery have arrived at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust to support the facilities team with portering and cleaning duties.

According to the trust behind the main hospitals in Eastbourne and St. Leonards, seven military personnel are supporting the team in total.

Five will work in the portering team and two will work with the rapid response cleaning team at Eastbourne DGH.

The trust said they will not be responsible for any direct patient care but will make an important contribution, supporting the immense efforts of health and care staff whose exhaustive work continues.

Kevin Hodge, Operations Facilities Manager, said:

"We would like to thank the military personnel for this assistance to help support our portering and rapid response cleaning teams during these challenging times.”

Bombardier Dominic Massey added:

“We are really pleased to be here to help the NHS and support staff at the hospital.”

In all, twenty military personnel are supporting the NHS in Sussex and are deployed to some of larger acute hospitals, supporting estates and facilities teams.

Across the country, reports say the armed forces and the NHS have been working closely throughout the pandemic.

This deployment is one of several supporting the NHS across the South East at this very busy time.
