A man is due to appear in court accused of coughing and spitting at police officers while claiming to be infected with coronavirus.

Matthew Richards, 24, unemployed, of Rosehill in Billingshurst, has been charged with a string of violent offences, including common assault of an emergency worker; assault by beating of an emergency worker; and criminal damage to property valued under £5,000.

He's also accused of attempted witness intimidation.

Police said the charges followed a report of a domestic incident at a property in Rosehill on Sunday morning (January 10).

While officers responded to the incident, a man is alleged to have coughed and spat at two police officers after telling them he had tested positive for Covid-19.

Richards is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates' Court on Monday (January 11).
