Crowds Go Back To Sussex's Beaches

Brighton and Hove Beach, 6pm, June 24 2020

As scores of visitors returned to Sussex's most popular beaches, the Met Office confirmed by mid-afternoon on Wednesday (June 24) that it had been the "warmest day of the year so far".

In the county, a weather station at Hurstpierpoint recorded 31.7 degrees Celsius, while some other locations were even hotter, with Heathrow Airport measuring 32.6 degrees Celsius.

Here in Sussex, the beaches in Brighton and Hove west of the Palace Pier received many hundreds of visitors, though images from our staff reporter indicated the crowds didn't match the busiest hot days of a typical summer.

Waste disposal, the subject of a city councillors' meeting a fortnight ago, remained a problem with some refuse bins overflowing.

A weather warning remained in effect for all Sussex, as Met Office forecasters said thunderstorms, some accompanied by hail, were likely to begin late on Thursday evening.

As things stood on Wednesday evening, the most likely time for Sussex to receive the kind of air movements that lead to lightning was in the early hours of Friday morning.
