Eastbourne: Two Men Sentenced For Burglary, Theft, Fraud

Two men convicted of burglary, theft and fraud offences in Eastbourne have been jailed for a total of 44 months.

On Sunday, August 9, police attended an address in Wharf Road at around 5am after a resident reported his property had been broken into.

Burglars had stole a bank card and keys to two vehicles, both of which had also been taken.

The bank card was subsequently used in several locations in the town following the break-in.

CCTV footage near the victim's home helped the Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team identify the two men.

The following day, officers recovered the stolen vehicles and arrested William Brazil, 44, and Amos Smith, 36. 

Unemployed Brazil, of Ceylon Place, Eastbourne, was charged with burglary, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, six counts of fraud by false representation and two counts of using a motor vehicle without insurance while Smith, unemployed, of Ersham Road Hailsham, was charged with burglary, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, and five counts of fraud by false representation.

Both pleaded guilty in court and they were jailed for 32 months and 12 months respectively.

“This is an excellent outcome as a result of great police work. Using local knowledge we were able to identify the offenders and locate and arrest them as soon as possible.

“The secondary investigation resulted in charges being authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service against both men, who then pleaded guilty at court.

 “Burglaries can have a devastating impact, both financially and emotionally, on victims and we take reports of this nature very seriously.

 “Please remember to leave homes secure at night, even if people are in. It can only take a moment for someone to steal valuable items such as keys and bank cards.”
