Grand National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell, who was born in Arundel, has died at the age of 34.
Trainer Alastair Ralph confirmed this afternoon (Tuesday) that Treadwell, who attended Angmering School, is dead.
Sky reported that Treadwell sprang one of the biggest surprises in the world's greatest steeplechase when riding 100-1 outsider Mon Mome to victory in 2009 for trainer Venetial Williams, on his first attempt.
Racing TV's Mike Vince said:
"He was subsequently third in the race in 2015 and rode a Cheltenham Festival winner in 2013.
"He retired having ridden nearly 300 winnder in 2018, returning 13 months later.
"His death is a huge shock to all in national hunt racing, at the age of just 34 he'd been an assistant trainer in recent months."
The cause of his death has not been confirmed.
