UPDATE: Hove School Warning As Two Girls Approached By Predator

Local police and a school in Hove have released warnings after two girls were approached by a man on separate occasions, asking them to go with him.

On Facebook, Sussex Police said:

We are aware of two reports of schoolchildren being approached by a man in Brighton and Hove.

A child reported being approached by a man in Seven Dials on Tuesday morning (10 January), and a second child reported being approached and spoken to by a man in New Church Road on Monday morning (16 January).

An investigation has been launched into both incidents, which includes extra patrols in both areas around school drop-off and pick-up times.

Please report any suspicious activity to police either online or via 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.

The warning follows a communication sent to parents of St Andrew's CE Primary School, informing parents that the Year 8 pupil (who had previously attended the school) was approached on New Church Road and had been asked repeatedly to go with the man, who told her it was important and that she could trust him.

The girl described him as wearing torn clothes and a hat.

Update (Jan 30)

Police have posted on Facebook to reassure the public that they're continuing to patrol around Seven Dials and New Church Road following reports of a man approaching schoolchildren in the area.

Chief Inspector Andy Saville said:

“We are taking these reports extremely seriously, which is why the public will continue to see an increased police presence in the area.

“These officers are there to spot any suspicious behaviour, act as a visible deterrent and provide a clear point of contact for anyone with concerns.

“I can confirm that no new incidents have been reported after the initial four reports between 10 and 17 January.

“The investigation is ongoing to determine whether the incidents are linked and to identify any suspects.

“We also remain in close contact with local schools to offer reassurance and advice.

“Please report anything suspicious online or via 101, quoting Operation Guildford. In an emergency, always dial 999.”
