Coastguard crews in Littlehampton were called to assist harbour master teams with an incident on the River Arun yesterday (Friday).
Crews were called at 4.40pm to reports of an 80-metre vessel, the MV Elise cargo ship - which had come loose from its moorings in Littlehampton Harbour - and was blocking the breadth of the river.
The vessel's crew alongside harbour staff and vessels responded to stabilise the ship, which subsequently ran aground due to the ebbing tide.
Teams began to refloat the vessel on the incoming tide, and tugs helped to reposition the vessel back at its berth, where it was unloaded without further incident.
A HM Coastguard spokesperson said:
"Littlehampton coastguard rescue team was sent to assist Littlehampton Harbour Master and the vessel was refloated on the tide late last night and moored locally."
There were no reported injuries and no evidence of either damage or pollution.
