Groups and businesses working in the cultural sector throughout Sussex are receiving a total of £13,224,121 in Cultural Recovery Fund grants from the government

The groups in the More Radio area form part of 2,700 cultural and creative organisations across the UK getting a share of the current £400m funding round from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

The kinds of organisations included in the support cover theatres, galleries, performance groups, art organisations, and local venues.

It's intended that the funds will help them reopen and recover from the closures enforced by coronavirus safety laws.

Some of the more notable grants given to the More Radio area include:

  • £953,264 for Chichester Festival Theatre, which produces a diverse range of dramas, musicals and new commissions - with these often transferring to the West End, nationally and internationally. Through digital and streaming developments in 2020, the theatre has expanded its global reach to across 52 countries. It also has the largest youth theatre in the UK, with 800 members attending weekly. The Culture Recovery Grant funding will enable them to build up the scale of activities through reprogramming 2020 postponed shows, re-establishing LEAP's community partnerships to reduce barriers and broaden reach and online output.
  • £470,500 for Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, a leading regional and national cultural hub, reaching over 600,000 people a year through its venue Brighton Dome and annual Brighton Festival - the largest curated multi-arts festival in England. Programming ranges from music, dance, theatre, visual arts, digital and comedy alongside creative learning and participation. Funding will help Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival invest in digital programming and prepare for the annual Brighton Festival in May with the partial re-opening of the Concert Hall.
  • £325,000 for De La Warr Pavilion, an iconic Grade I listed modernist building and centre for contemporary visual arts with a 1500 capacity live venue, in Bexhill, East Sussex. De La Warr Pavilion has been bringing communities together through culture for 85 years, through exhibitions, learning and participation and a live programme (music, comedy). Funding will support the reopening of the venue, safeguard the building and help adapt its planned programme - including live streaming, moving indoor activities outside and an exhibition in partnership with England's Creative Coast.
  • £123,500 for Komedia, an award-winning venue in Brighton that programmes over 700 events annually across comedy, theatre, music and children's shows - including acts like The Artic Monkeys, Mumford & Sons and Eddie Izzard. Funding will support the venue to develop a limited programme of live and socially distanced events between April and June, as well as expansion of its live-streamed events.
  • £37,397 for Barefoot Opera in Hastings, which aims to make opera more inclusive and accessible by reworking the classics and commissioning contemporary productions. It is embedded in its local community - focusing on inclusion, wellbeing and community cohesion - providing a cultural offer that is appropriate and fun. Funding will be used to deliver workshops with Arts on Prescription and the Hastings Refugee Buddy Project, programming to support disadvantaged young children and online training and mentoring.
  • £49,000 for Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, an independent museum based in the South Downs that has previously been shortlisted for Art Fund Museum of the Year. It presents the story of artists and craftspeople based in and around Ditching since 1900, as well as celebrating contemporary craftsmakers and artists. Funds will support development of a new show titled 'John Vernon Lord and Friends', alongside a blended programme of talks and workshops and marketing.
  • £25,000 for The JMK Trust, a charity that runs a national talent development programme for theatre directors and makers, working in partnership with a national network of twelve regional theatres. Funding will support the delivery of the JMKSpace online programme, as well as recruitment for up to three Assistant Director bursary positions and production development.
  • £128,470 for Shoreham's Ropetackle Arts Centre, a grassroots multi-arts venue, with a specialism in live music, attracting over 40,000 people a year. Funding will support the venue to reopen with a programme of social distanced performances and reduced capacity to ensure safety.
