Plans For New Market In Worthing Town Centre

A new monthly market is being planned in Worthing town centre to "promote local traders and create added interest in the town centre".

Around 30 traders have already signed up for the market, with more expected, ahead of the launch on Saturday, October 16th.

It'll be held around Montague Street and the junctions with Montague Place and Liverpool Gardens, with a possible extension west along Montague Street if it grows.

Customers can expect fresh, seasonal produce and the council hopes it'll help to regenerate the town centre.

Andy Willems, Head of Place & Economy at the Councils, said:

“Adur & Worthing Councils currently run a host of markets throughout the region, which are hugely popular with shoppers.

“And we are extremely excited to now be able to bring a market to Worthing town centre as well. As we all know, the high street and particularly independent traders have been hit badly by the pandemic, on top of having to compete with online shopping.

“The benefits to the community as a whole are huge as it boosts the local economy, supports local producers and creates jobs, while shopping locally is far better for the environment.”

Cllr Kevin Jenkins, Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, added:

“Independent businesses sell a range of delicious produce that is fresher and, more often than not, isn’t available through larger retailers and are often run by our friends and neighbours, adding character and a sense of community in a friendly, bustling atmosphere.

“I am sure this is going to be an amazing market that will only grow and grow and I look forward to seeing you all.”

Sharon Clarke from Worthing Town Centre Initiative said:

“Having spoken to many retailers and traders, a monthly market in Worthing is an exciting prospect.

"We have so many brilliant local producers of delicious food and goods and being able to give them a showcase on the High Street will bring more people into the Town Centre.”

Single pitch stalls measuring 2.5metres x 2.5metres are £45 and a double pitch measuring 5m x 2.5m is £65.
