Pledge Of Support For Airport Workers From Crawley Borough Council

Gatwick Airport

Crawley Borough Council is pledging support for the 1,100 Gatwick workers with jobs at risk, after Norwegian announced closure of all its long-haul routes.

On Thursday (January 14), the airline said the dwindling air travel business was forcing it to rethink its business plans, and return to being a short-haul business only.

Borough councillor Peter Smith, responsible for Planning and Economic Development, told More Radio:

"This news is yet another devastating blow to the Crawley economy, which is already one of the worst affected by the pandemic.

"We urge the government to listen to our repeated requests for help, following this worsening situation for our aviation sector.

"Our thoughts are with the staff affected by this announcement.

"We offer them our support through Employ Crawley, which provides a free service to support jobseekers."
