Police Officers Assaulted During Incidents In Brighton And Angmering

A Brighton police officer has suffered a dislocated shoulder and been kicked in the abdomen and punched, while responding to an incident in the city.

It happened in New Road last Friday night (Jan 13) and involved a group of people. A Special Constable was also punched to the face while dealing with the same incident.

Two men aged 22 and 24 were arrested on suspicion of affray and assaulting an emergency worker.

A third officer was assaulted earlier that same day while responding to a disturbance at a house in Angmering. He was punched, leading to bruising and swelling of his eye that required medical attention. A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

Detective Superintendent Rachel Carr said:

“Police officers are human beings who put their own safety at risk every day to protect the public.

“It is absolutely unacceptable that they should be assaulted, insulted, or abused while carrying out their duties.

“These three officers in Sussex were the victims of sustained, violent assaults that left them with significant injuries. This should never be considered ‘part of the job’. It is not part of the job and it will not be tolerated.

“I would like to thank the officers and all of their colleagues across the county for their continued dedication and commitment to making our communities safer places for us all to live.”
