Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.
The Duke of Edinburgh passed away this morning (Friday 9 April).
The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen, and was the longest-servicing royal consort in British history.
The couple had four children, eight grand-children and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was taken to hospital over Christmas in 2011 for treatment for a blocked artery.
In 2012 he was admitted to hospital during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with a bladder infection, and in 2013 had an exploratory operation on his abdomen.
He had celebrated his 99th birthday in June 2020.
It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip, grandfather of Prince Harry, said he was ‘delighted’ that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their second child.
The Duke of Edinburgh last visited Sussex when he took a royal flight on board the British Airways i360 in 2016.
He arrived in Brighton on October 28th to officially open the tower.

Before that, Prince Philip visited Newhaven, Lewes and Brighton in October 2013.
He reportedly accompanied the Queen for the first time since 2007, visiting West Quays Fisheries in Newhaven, a new YHA hostel in the South Downs and enjoyed a pint at Harveys Brewery in Lewes
His trip ended at The Keep at Falmer, to see the East Sussex county archive.
Among other visits, the Duke of Edinburgh accompanied Her Majesty The Queen to Durrington High School in Worthing in March 1999, arriving by helicopter at Broadwater Green.
But it was not until May 2017, after carrying out more than 20,000 solo public engagements, that the then 96-year-old retired from his own programme of royal duties, occasionally stepping out to support the Queen for big events.
