Sussex Police arrest of Eastbourne man caught on camera

An arrest of an Eastbourne man has been caught on camera, leading to an investigation into the force used by a Sussex Police officer. Sussex Police were called by a member of the public who was concerned about a drunk man lying slumped on the ground in Newhaven town centre at 6.30pm on Friday (December 16).

— Toni H (@Hippychick3000) December 17, 2016 Two PCSOs attended initially and tried to assist the man who became verbally abusive towards them, prompting them to call for support. A police officer joined them and they tried get the man to leave the area, offering help to get a taxi. Sussex police say the man did not calm down and was arrested, they report the man then became violent and grabbed the officer. "In circumstances such as these, it is important that the risk of injury to the suspect, the public and the officers themselves is kept to the minimum and approved techniques may appear very robust. "However, we will ensure that this incident is investigated to satisfy ourselves that the actions taken were appropriate." 40 year old Neal Gould, a gardener of Langney Road in Eastbourne, has been charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place, assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty and assaulting a designated/accredited person. He was bailed to appear at Brighton Magistrates' Court on January 5.
