Zombies to lurk the streets of Arundel today (Friday, 3)

People out and about in Arundel today (Friday, 3) are being warned to watch out for a horde of zombies. A group of the walking dead, dressed in medieval costumes, are set to turn the town red in Tarrant Street throughout Friday. The zombies will be around from 10am to 2pm today, and from 6pm until close tonight, to celebrate the opening of the new Arundel Historic Walking Tours gift shop, and to promote walking – or maybe shuffling or staggering – tours of the town. Event organiser Trish Murrell said: “Being that Arundel has got so much history, we needed to go into theme for the town, so what better way than to go than medieval? “We’re going to have some knights in shining armour, medieval brides and some medieval tour guides as well - it’s going to be an interesting array of suspects that will be lurching through the streets.” Today’s event is the first in a series of zombie walks and themed events across Sussex this year in aid of the charity Guildcare, leading up to the District of the Dead festival in Worthing on October 14. More than 300 people took to the streets in costume at the first event in 2013 and organisers are keen to assemble an even bigger collection of freaks and crawlers this year. Other planned events include scare-filled movie nights, a Ghostbusters-themed day for children in August and even a zombie bake-off - for those who might prefer cake to brains. People of all ages are welcome in whatever zombie-themed clothing they can create. Trish added: "We've got all the little ones, who love Halloween and think it's so much fun, and then it goes all through the ages - even up to the elderly. "If anybody gets a little bit nervous we tell them to 'meow' - because if you 'meow' at a zombie loud enough they will run away!" More information about today, and the District of the Dead celebrations, can be found on the event's official Facebook page.
