A 37-year-old man from Midhurst has been jailed for three years after assaulting and choking a woman he knew.

Jason Santon was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on September 18 after being found guilty of three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of intentional strangulation.

The offences took place between 2022 and 2023.

In February 2022, Santon grabbed the victim by the neck and hair and attempted to choke her. A month later, he knelt on her chest and choked her. In July 2023, he struck her, leaving her needing hospital treatment.

The victim described living in “constant fear” because of Santon’s violence, saying she never wanted to feel that way again or for other women to experience the same.

She reported the offences to Sussex Police, who arrested Santon.

He has also been given a five-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.

PC Angelika Morge said the abuse continued to affect the victim and tackling violence against women and girls remained a priority for Sussex Police.

She said officers were determined to secure justice and encouraged anyone experiencing domestic abuse to report it.
