Meet the famous Georgian poet, writer, scientist and early feminist who will entertain you with the story of her life & loves. Accompanied by music by Handel.
The play takes place in Lady Montague's town house in Tunbridge wells in 1762. Lady Mary Wortley Montague was born in London in 1689 to Evelyn Pierrepoint, Earl of Kingston and his wife Lady Mary Fielding. Against her father's wishes, she married Lord Edward Wortley Montague. In 1718 when he was appointed ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, she travelled with him and their children to Constantinople. Her correspondence from the Turkish capital are some of the most striking and interesting letters of the eighteenth century and give a vivid impression of the life and culture of the city.
The couple eventually became estranged, and her husband returned with their children to England. Lady Mary then met and fell in love with Count Algarotti when living in Venice, and later moved to Lovere in Northern Italy in 1739.
The play takes the form of a soiree given by Lady Montague in which she looks back over her life and loves. It makes use of the actual letters she wrote and includes music by contemporary eighteenth century composers.
The play is in two acts, with an interval of 20 minutes.
If it's warm and sunny, bring a blanket for an early evening bring-you-own-picnic.
Tea, coffee and cakes will be served.
Tickets will not be available at the door.
