Brighton’s Royal Pavilion ice rink will not return this Christmas, with the city council confirming it will reopen at a new location in 2027.

The rink has been a popular part of the city’s festive attractions, but restoration work in the Pavilion Gardens means it cannot operate there this winter.

At a council meeting on Thursday, Ellen McLeay asked whether the rink would return for the end of 2026.

David McGregor confirmed the plans had been discussed with organisers, with the attraction set to move to the Old Steine next year.

Earlier this year, an email to volunteer gardeners warned that damage caused by the rink had scarred the gardens and contributed significantly to their inclusion on the Heritage at Risk Register.

It also raised concerns that hosting the attraction during the restoration work could disrupt the project, increase costs and put the wider renovations at risk.

Historic England added the Royal Pavilion to its Heritage at Risk Register in 2017.

David McGregor said he had explored every option to keep the rink in place for Christmas 2026, but it had not been possible.

He said the council was looking forward to many more successful years for the attraction at its new home in the heart of Brighton.
