Lewes Railway Line On Track To Reopen After Train Derailment

Network Rail says repairs following a train derailment near Lewes are around 80% complete, with the line expected to reopen on Tuesday 1st September.

The derailment happened on 13th August and led to a complex recovery operation involving temporary foundations, heavy lifting equipment and the removal of damaged carriages.

With the trains now cleared, engineers have been repairing the embankment and installing new track and signalling equipment.

Network Rail says the focus will then move to final testing before services can safely resume.

Infrastructure Director Louise Greaves said the recovery had been “complex and challenging” but that strong progress had been made towards reopening the railway.

She also thanked Southern and freight customers for their patience while the work continues.
