Passenger Train Derails Near Lewes As Emergency Services Rush To Scene

A passenger train has derailed near Lewes, prompting a major emergency response and widespread disruption across the Sussex rail network.
British Transport Police said officers were called to reports of a derailment close to Lewes railway station at around 3.54pm on Thursday.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, paramedics and other emergency services are at the scene, with residents being urged to avoid the area.
Southern and Network Rail confirmed a passenger train had derailed in the Lewes area and said all lines through the station had been closed.
Trains are currently unable to run between Brighton and Lewes, Haywards Heath and Lewes, or Seaford and Eastbourne towards Lewes.
Southern said passengers should delay their journeys or use alternative routes, with major disruption expected until at least 10pm.
Witnesses have described a significant emergency response involving numerous ambulances and other emergency service vehicles.
Lewes MP James MacCleary described the derailment as a "very serious and developing incident", while Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was "deeply concerned" by reports of the incident.
Lewes District Council said it was supporting the emergency services and urged people to stay away from the area.
There has not yet been any official confirmation of casualties, and emergency services have asked people to avoid speculation while the response continues.
