Person Dies On Railway Line In 'Unexplained' Circumstances

A person has died after an incident on the railway line near Balcombe, causing major disruption to services between Brighton, Gatwick Airport and London.

Emergency services were called to the tracks in the early hours of Tuesday, May 5. The casualty was found near the station and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said crews were dispatched at around 4.20am following reports of a person requiring medical attention on the line.

The incident led to the closure of the railway between Haywards Heath and Gatwick, with power to the track switched off while crews worked at the scene.

British Transport Police confirmed it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Officers say enquiries are ongoing.

Passengers faced widespread cancellations and delays throughout the morning, with rail operators advising people to postpone journeys where possible.
