People living in Hastings and Rother have been given a two-day priority window to book tickets to see the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum in London.

The booking period opened at 10am on Monday, giving residents near the site of the Battle of Hastings an opportunity to see the historic artwork while it is on display in the UK.

The tapestry tells the story of events leading up to the Norman Conquest in 1066 and has been loaned to Britain as part of an agreement with France.

It will be open to the public until July 11 next year.

Residents can book through the British Museum box office by phone. They must provide a postcode and use a payment card registered to a Hastings or Rother billing address.

Dr Kieran Mullan, MP for Bexhill and Battle, said:

“It is only right that people living in the area where these historic events took place have the opportunity to see the Tapestry while it is here in Britain.”

Demand for tickets has been high, with more than 65,000 people joining the online queue on the first day of general sales. A record 100,000 tickets were sold on July 1.

Two further priority booking windows are planned, with the next opening in two days and another in January.
