West Sussex Businesses Warned Over Fire Risk From Artificial Plants

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is warning businesses to consider the fire risks posed by artificial plants and decorative materials.

The warning follows a recent fire safety inspection in Worthing, where officers found a large section of a business ceiling covered with artificial foliage.

The material was removed after the issue was referred to the fire safety team.

Businesses are being urged to review artificial plants, wall coverings and display materials as part of their fire risk assessments, particularly when changing the layout or appearance of premises.

Dave Bray, Head of Protection at West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said plastic decorations can help fires spread quickly and produce large amounts of toxic smoke.

He said businesses should seek advice if they are unsure whether materials are suitable for use.

The service also warned that around a quarter of businesses do not reopen following a serious fire.
