Plans to allow Worthing Ice Rink to continue operating at Steyne Gardens until February 2033 have been approved by Worthing Borough Council.

The temporary ice rink will be able to operate for up to 110 days per year between November and February.

The report states that the ice rink ‘contributes to the vibrancy of the town over the Christmas period’ and aligns with plans to regenerate the town centre.

Richard Bradley, director of Town Centre Ice Rinks Ltd, spoke in favour of the application at a planning committee meeting on Wednesday, August 12.

He said: “We believe the continued operation of a seasonal ice rink in the central Worthing position represents a strong investment in the local community, delivering measurable benefits across sport, education, well being, and the local economy.”

Mr Bradley also spoke of the ice rink’s success in previous years, including: “Enabling over 1,000 children to experience skating who may not otherwise have the opportunity” and hosting over 450 pupils for educational and recreational visits.

“Community engagement remains the heart of our business.”

The Worthing Society and some residents raised concerns over the poor state of the grass following the removal of the rink each year. Mr Bradley said that the damage caused to the grass could also be attributed to other temporary events using the space and vehicles conducting maintenance.

The report states that maintenance of the grass was not completed this year due to building works for the next stage of ‘Worthing’s Heat Network’ taking place in Steyne Gardens.

According to the planning report, a condition requiring the land to be restored after the rink is removed would be reapplied, to be completed by March 15 each year.

Councillor Richard Nowak agreed that the upkeep of the grass be prioritised going forward and suggested that rainwater be collected off the roof of the ice rink, to be used in restoring the grass.

The planning officer recommended the application for approval and councillors voted unanimously in favour.

It's great to hear that Worthing Ice Rink will be around for more years, adding to the festive atmosphere. For those looking for winter activities, there are also fun options like akedo coloring pages for kids to enjoy.
