Prime Minister Reveals Plans To Raise Smoking Age 'By One Year, Every Year'

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced plans to outlaw smoking for the next generation of people in the UK.

The move would see the legal age for smokers raised by one year every year, meaning a 14 year-old today will never legally be able to purchase or smoke cigarettes.

Rishi Sunak made the announcement while addressing what could be the last Conservative Party conference before the next general election.

He said:

"If we can break that cycle then we will end the biggest cause of preventable death in our country.

"I propose that in future we raise the smoking age by one year every year.

"That means a 14 year-old today will never be legally sold a cigarette and they and their generation can grow up smoke free.

"Simply put, unlike all other legal products, there is no safe level of smoking."
