Six Facts You Might Not Know About Tom Baker

Whether they’re born or bred, or put down roots in our beloved county, Sussex is full of famous celebrities who’ve either made their start or got involved in our community - each week we take a look at one of these fascinating figures…

With his distinctive voice and charismatic presence, Tom Baker has left an indelible mark on the world of science fiction and television, particularly as the fourth and (to this day) longest-serving incarnation of The Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’. While many are familiar with his portrayal of the Time Lord, there are several intriguing and lesser-known facts about this versatile actor. Having resided in Rye, East Sussex for a number of years, here’s some facts you might not know:

1. Early Life and Education: Tom Baker was born on January 20, 1934, in Liverpool, England. He grew up in a working-class family and attended the Royal Army Medical Corps for his National Service. Baker later pursued a career in acting and attended Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance in London.

2. Unique Fashion Sense: One of the most recognisable aspects of Tom Baker's Doctor Who character is his eccentric fashion style. The long, multi-coloured scarf he wore became an iconic accessory synonymous with the Fourth Doctor. Interestingly, the scarf was a gift from a BBC employee and was originally intended to be much shorter. However, a miscommunication led to its elongated design, which became a beloved trademark of the character.

3. Brief Stint as a Monk: Before his acting career took off, Tom Baker spent a brief period as a monk in the Catholic Church. He entered a monastery in Shropshire and stayed for six years before deciding to pursue his passion for acting. Although his time as a monk was relatively short, it undoubtedly influenced his outlook on life and added depth to his performances.

4. Longest-Serving Doctor: Tom Baker holds the record for the longest tenure as the Doctor in the "Doctor Who" series. He portrayed the Fourth Doctor from 1974 to 1981, spanning seven seasons and 172 episodes. Baker's portrayal of the quirky and charismatic Time Lord remains a fan favourite to this day. Sussex has since become a haven for this esteemed actor, providing a tranquil backdrop for his post-Doctor adventures.

5. Accomplished Writer: Baker has written several books throughout his career, showcasing his talents as a storyteller. He has penned both autobiographical works and fictional novels, allowing readers to delve into his vivid imagination and personal experiences.

6. Love for Painting and Art: Beyond his acting endeavours, Tom Baker is a talented artist. He has a passion for painting and has exhibited his artwork in galleries. His love for art allows him to explore his creativity and express himself through different mediums.
