Police have charged a man with arson, attacking an emergency worker and cocaine possession, in connection with a serious fire at a house in Brighton.

Police found that flames had already started when they went to Shaftesbury Avenue in the city on May 24th, after hearing concerns for the welfare of a man.

Firefighters from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called, and evacuated nearby residents to safety as they brought the fire under control.

Officers said the fire was treated as deliberate and, after their investigation, a 50-year-old man from Brighton was arrested around a week later.

He has now been charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered, possession of cocaine and assaulting an emergency worker.

Police have not revealed the accused man's name.

He has been released on bail and ordered to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 14th.
