The pilot of a light aircraft was killed, police said, as his plane crashed north-west of Heathfield this morning.

Police believe the pilot died instantly as the aircraft came to the ground.

Emergency services were called to Herring Lane at 11am today, Tuesday August 4.

Firefighters from Heathfield, Uckfield, Battle and Wadhurst reported that they found that one small aircraft had crashed "on open ground" in a field south-west of a nearby air-strip.

The plane caught fire, which firefighters tackled using foam before leaving soon afterwards.

Air Accidents Investigation Branch staff have confirmed they've begun looking into what preceded the incident.

An unconfirmed report from the VoliAmo flying school situated in the same road, visible on the map above, said that the light aircraft had crashed shortly after take-off due to an engine failure, though the flight was unconnected to the school's tuition.

Police said the pilot's next of kin have been informed.
