Falmer School Lockdown During Police Hunt For Armed Man

Students at the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy were on lockdown inside their school this afternoon (September 17) while police searched nearby for a man who was reportedly armed.

The incident began around 2.55pm when police responded to a report about a suspect who was armed with a machete, and who was in a woodland area off Brighton's Lewes Road.

Assisted by the police helicopter, officers said they began a search of the area.

As a precaution students at the nearby community academy school were kept inside.

Later, police escorted the pupils safely home, as the young people were given instructions to avoid the woodland area, where officers believe the suspect could have been.

Sussex Police added that no-one had been threatened or harmed.

Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Rayland said:

"We would like to thank everyone involved for their co-operation and patience.

"Our priority is to keep people safe.

"We have now stood down the search but are continuing to carry out enquiries into the reported incident."
