Heat Today In Sussex: "Take Avoidance Action" Warns Met Office

Met Office "level 3" heat-health warning for Sussex today (25 June)

On Thursday morning (June 25), Britain's official weather forecasters issued a new and higher-level heat alert for all of Sussex.

The Met Office's new warning was a "level 3" heat-health alert.

It means the county's social and healthcare services must now target specific actions at high-risk groups of people, to help them stay safe and healthy in the high temeperatures.

Forecasters said:

"We ask that Sussex residents follow this advice today: look out for others, especially older people, young children and babies and those with underlying health conditions.

"You should close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors.

"It is wise to drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol, dress appropriately for the weather and slow down when it is hot."

The Met Office added detail to its forecast for Thursday and beyond:

"Temperatures exceeding 30C were observed quite widely across the UK on Wednesday, with 32.6C observed in London.

"Similar temperatures, perhaps a degree or two higher are expected quite widely on Thursday, with only the far north remaining less hot.

"Thundery showers will then develop over parts of the southwest overnight Thursday into Friday, spreading north across western and northern parts of the UK during Friday morning, before clearing.

"Hot, humid weather is expected to follow, likely above heat-health warning thresholds again in parts of eastern, southeastern and central England."

Advice on how to reduce the risk can be obtained from the Heatwave Plan for England page, from your doctor or local chemist, or ring NHS 111.
