No Money For Worthing From Government Levelling Up Fund

Worthing Borough Council is to receive nothing from the second round of the government’s Levelling Up Fund after its £20m bid was turned down.

The money from the £2.1bn pot, would have been spent on rebuilding the Lido so that it could be brought back into public use, transforming the Worthing Museum & Art Gallery, and improving the street-scene linking the town’s attractions to create a ‘walkable, welcoming town centre’.

Leader Beccy Cooper described the news as ‘disappointing’, adding that the council would work to find alternative funding for the rejuvenation of the Lido and regeneration of the town centre.

Dr Cooper also called for proper funding for local government rather than having authorities compete for funding pots.

A council spokesman added:

“We are really disappointed that we’ve been unsuccessful in this round of Levelling Up funding.

“We will continue to explore sources of additional funding so that we can make Worthing an even better place to live, work and visit.”

Levelling Up was launched in 2020 with the aim of closing the gap between rich and poor parts of the country by improving services such as education, broadband and transport.

The first round of funding was awarded in October 2021.

A total of 111 areas across the UK were awarded money from the second round.
