Two Catalytic Converters Per Day Taken From Sussex Cars

Thieves are targeting valuable catalytic converters underneath cars parked in Sussex at the rate of two a day, police say.

Officers in Mid Sussex told More Radio today (July 6) about widespread thefts of the devices that convert many harmful gases, produced by internal combustion engines, into less toxic pollutants.

According to a Sussex Police prevention team, Honda cars, particularly the 'Jazz' model, appear to have been singled-out as a focus for criminals, as a source said the converter is particularly easy to reach.

It's believed at least one organised gang is involved, and is covering more than this county as similar reports are being made in Kent and Surrey.

The metals have a high value, with rhodium (one of the Earth's rarest metals) fetching around £4,000 per ounce, palladium approximately £1,375 for the same quantity, and platinum costing around £700 for an ounce.

Reports of suspicious activity under cars, especially at night, are always welcomed, officers said.
