Two Men Arrested In Lewes On Suspicion Of Drug & Driving Offences

Two men have been arrested by officers after they were seen riding their motorbikes erratically through the Cuilfail Tunnel in Lewes last Monday.

Officers from the Sussex Roads Policing Unit, who were out on their first day of a motorcycle training course last Monday (July 12), noticed one of the men try to overtake the other on the A26.

They were both stopped and searched at the northern entrance of the tunnel.

Officers noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from the men and, upon questioning, a small bag of cannabis fell out of his pocket.

The men were notified that they were going to be detained under the Misuse of Drugs Act, at which point one of the men attempted to flee the scene.

He ran towards the roundabout at the junction with the A2029 Malling Street, pursued and detained by both officers.

The 21-year-old man from Seaford was found to be in possession of cannabis and suspected cocaine and MDMA (ecstasy) pills.

He was also found in possession of drug dealing bags, a large amount of cash, and a knife.

He was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, possessing drugs with intent to supply, and possession of a bladed article.

A further search of his home was conducted, where officers seized a mobile phone and a suspected offensive weapon, namely a stun gun.

Meanwhile a 20-year-old man from Newhaven was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and possessing drugs with intent to supply.

Both men failed roadside drug swipe tests and were taken into custody. They were interviewed and have since been released under investigation.
