"What Do You Want To See At Southwick Square?" Public Consultation There On Saturday

Residents and businesses are being asked what they think of plans to revitalise Southwick Square.

The pedestrian area in the heart of the shopping precinct is showing its age and needs a revamp to make it an inviting space for residents and visitors again.

Adur District Council has drawn up plans to give the site a facelift that will also make it more accessible and more environmentally friendly. The larger open space would be able to be used for performances, markets and for people to sit and eat.

The proposed scheme includes new pedestrian lighting, seating and attractive gardens for people to walk through and enjoy, while still fitting in with the heritage of the area.

There is a space for the community Christmas tree while the existing pine trees remain and drought-resistant species will be added to improve air quality and increase biodiversity in the green areas.

The aim is to make the area one where people will be happy to sit and spend time, rather than simply walking through to get to and from the shops.

Cllr Angus Dunn, the Deputy Leader of the Council, said:

“Southwick has a very popular town centre but Southwick Square could do with extra space for events like markets.

“We want to give the area the facelift it deserves so that even more people want to come here to shop or stop for a coffee.”

The scheme is to be funded by the Council and West Sussex County Council. It has been designed by a local team while the Council also hopes to employ local contractors to carry out the work.

Council officers and councillors will be in Southwick Square between 10am and midday on Saturday (1 October) to answer any questions that people have about the plans.

More details of the proposals are available at https://www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/southwick-square-consultation/. The consultation is running until Sunday 30 October and anyone with comments can email them to [email protected].
