Dog Walkers Could Face Fines Under New Hastings Plans

Dog owners in Hastings could face fines if they don't have a suitable way to pick up after their pets, under new plans being considered by the borough council.

Hastings Borough Council's cabinet is being asked to extend its Dog Control Public Space Protection Order for another three years.

The proposed changes would make it an offence to be out with a dog without the means to remove its faeces.

The council says the measure is intended to prevent dog fouling rather than generate large numbers of fines.

Existing rules, including requirements to clean up after dogs and keep them on leads along the promenade, would remain.

Cabinet members are also being asked to relax the current ban on dogs at Hastings Castle, following a request from the company managing the site.

Troika Projects says responsible owners and controlled dogs could be accommodated while making the attraction more welcoming.

The proposals would also affect seasonal dog restrictions on beaches and rules around dogs being off leads in parks and gardens.

Both proposed changes received majority support during a council consultation held in July.
