The latest phase of a major project to create a pedestrian-friendly route through Eastbourne has been completed.

Parts of Eastbourne town centre have reopened following the completion of the latest phase of a pedestrianisation project.

Terminus Road between Bankers' Corner and Marks & Spencer is now pedestrianised, along with the section between Grand Parade and Seaside Road, known as the Victoria Place phase.

The work forms part of plans to create a 0.6-mile walkable route linking Eastbourne railway station with the seafront.

East Sussex County Council's lead member for transport and environment, Peter Griffiths, said the project had experienced difficulties but had resulted in a "vastly improved town centre".

He said the reopened area has a "new, modern feel", making it easier and safer for people to access the town centre while encouraging more visitors and supporting the local economy.

Businesses previously raised concerns about the impact of disruption caused by the pedestrianisation works.

Eastbourne Borough Council's cabinet member for enterprise, Colin Swansborough, thanked businesses for their patience and said business rate relief had been provided to those affected by the work.
