Four People And Dog Rescued After Becoming Cut Off By Tide In East Sussex

Four people and a dog have been rescued after becoming trapped beneath cliffs on the East Sussex coast.

Emergency services were called on Monday evening after the group became cut off by the incoming tide between Rock-a-Nore in Hastings and Fairlight.

HM Coastguard said the group was found "wet, cold and tired" after their escape route was restricted by rising water.

A multi-agency rescue operation was launched involving coastguard teams from Hastings, Bexhill and Rye Bay, alongside Hastings RNLI Lifeboat and Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat.

Rescuers were able to safely escort all four people and their dog from the beach before the tide cut off access completely.

HM Coastguard said everyone involved was brought to safety without injury.

Welfare checks were carried out at the scene, with blankets, water and sugary snacks provided to help those rescued recover from the ordeal.

Following the incident, the coastguard is reminding people to take extra care when exploring the coastline, particularly in areas beneath cliffs where tides can rise quickly and unexpectedly.

Members of the public are being urged to check tide times before setting out, carry a means of calling for help and turn back early if conditions become unsafe.

A spokesperson said:

"If you become cut off by the tide, move to the highest safe point, call 999 and ask for the coastguard."

The warning comes as warmer weather and longer days continue to attract more visitors to Sussex's coastline.
