A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead at a property in Durrington, prompting a major police investigation.

Officers were called to an address in Durrington Lane at around 7.50pm on Thursday (14 May) following concerns for the welfare of a woman.

Emergency services attended, but despite their efforts, a 65-year-old woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A 37-year-old man from Durrington has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and assaulting a police officer. He remains in police custody.

Detectives say enquiries are continuing and have established that the woman and the suspect were known to one another.

Detective Inspector Amanda Zinyama, of the Major Crime Team, said:

“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the woman’s loved ones at this difficult time.
“We are in the early stages of a fast-moving investigation, and officers are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances.
“While we understand this incident will cause concern locally, we believe it to be isolated, with no threat to the wider community, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
“There will be an increased police presence in the area while enquiries are ongoing.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information which may assist the investigation to come forward online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Bucklow.
