The son of an East Sussex couple jailed in Iran has handed the government a petition with more than 100,000 signatures calling for their release.

Lindsay and Craig Foreman were arrested in January 2025 while travelling through Iran on a motorbike journey from Europe to Australia.

They were sentenced to 10 years in prison for espionage in February, which they deny.

The couple are being held at Evin Prison in Tehran.

Lindsay’s son, Joe Bennett, took the petition to Westminster on Wednesday, marking the 656th day of their detention.

He also wrote to Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, saying:

“I am still just a son who misses my mum. I am doing everything I can. I am asking you to do everything you can, too.”

Bennett said Mr Miliband had agreed to meet him.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, MP Tony Vaughan called for stronger action, including diplomatic protection for the couple.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham described their sentence as “appalling and unjustifiable” and said the government would continue working to secure their return.

The Foreign Office said the couple’s health and welfare remained a priority, adding that British diplomats were providing consular assistance.
