Plans to demolish a house in Small Dole and replace it with new homes have been approved by Horsham District Council.
The “permission in principle” application for Delta, a three-bedroom bungalow on Shoreham Road, was unanimously approved by the council’s planning committee on Tuesday (18 November).
The approval covers five homes on the site, rather than the maximum of nine originally proposed, as the additional four would extend beyond the built-up area and into the countryside.
Councillor Roger Noel said building extra homes at the rear of the plot would appear “incongruous” and “out of character” with the surrounding area.
The site includes the existing bungalow, a detached garage, outbuildings, and agricultural buildings. The latest proposal is for single-storey homes, which the council report noted would fit with the character of Shoreham Road.
The council received 13 letters of objection citing over-development, loss of privacy, and the homes being out of character, while four letters of support said the development was appropriate and addressed local housing needs.
This approval covers only the principle of development; a second application will be required to detail the technical plans for the new homes.
The application can be viewed via Horsham District Council’s planning portal using reference DC/25/0849.
