Red Heat Warning Issued As South East Braces For Temperatures Of Up To 38C

A rare red heat warning has been issued for parts of South East England as temperatures are forecast to reach up to 38C this week.

The Met Office warning comes into force at 9am on Wednesday and remains in place until 9pm on Thursday, with forecasters warning of an "exceptional spell" of hot and humid weather that could have significant impacts on public health and services.

East Surrey Hospital has declared a critical incident due to increased demand, while South East Water is urging customers to use water sparingly after supply issues were reported in parts of Kent and a burst water main affected customers in Crawley.

Weather experts say this week's temperatures could break existing June records by several degrees.

Residents are being advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged periods in direct sunlight, check on vulnerable relatives and neighbours, and take extra care around water.

Network Rail is advising passengers to travel only if necessary in areas covered by the red warning, while some schools and colleges across the region have announced temporary closures due to the extreme heat.

The warning covers much of the South East, with health officials urging people to take precautions as temperatures continue to climb.
