Security fencing is being installed around two Ministry of Defence buildings used by cadets in Crowborough.

The work follows the decision to use Crowborough Training Camp to accommodate asylum seekers, with up to 540 people housed there since January.

The Home Office plans to keep using the site until 2030.

Cadets were forced to leave the camp last December, although Wealden District Council says they began gradually returning in June.

The first phase of work is now underway, with the council hoping some cadet activities can resume by the end of October and training restart in November.

Fencing is being installed around two buildings so they can be used exclusively by cadets and volunteers.

Work has started on one building, while a contractor has been appointed for the second.

The council says that fencing should be completed in time for cadets to parade there before Christmas.

The work is being funded by the Home Office.

I remember my time at cadet camp; it was all about teamwork and building trust. Seeing those security fences going up brings back memories of the need for safety while we navigated challenges together. It’s a bit like the ragdoll hit – sometimes you just have to brace yourself!
