What's believed to be the remains of a man, found in the English Channel yesterday afternoon (Saturday 11 September), have been brought to Eastbourne by lifeboat volunteers.

On Saturday afternoon, 11 September, the body was spotted in the water by a passing vessel.

The RNLI said its All Weather Lifeboat from Eastbourne attended the scene soon after 1.30pm, to recover the casualty from the busy South West shipping lane, some 15 miles away from the coast.

A coastguard helicopter helped volunteers on the water locate the body.

At Sovereign Harbour, the remains were passed into the care of the waiting coroner, and Sussex Police officers.

RNLI coxswain Mark Sawyer said:

"The crew members were able to recover the casualty onto the All Weather Lifeboat in challenging sea conditions."

Police confirmed this morning that enquiries are under way and the body is thought to be that of a man possibly in his thirties or forties.

He had been in the water for several weeks.

Officers said there are currently no suspicious circumstances and a postmortem will be arranged.

They added:

"There is currently no evidence to suggest that this is linked to migrant crossings."
