PC Matthew Blades, described by the club as a "proud Red", was killed in a collision with a vehicle going the wrong way down the A66 last weekend. The vehicle that struck his had been involved in a police pursuit shortly before, but officers broke off the chase. Mr Blades' colleague PC Tom Clough also died in the collision. The club expressed "great sadness" at the death of the two PCs and invited Mr Blades' wife and two sons to their Premier League match against Ipswich at Old Trafford. Walking with captain Bruno Fernandes and goalkeeper Senne Lammens, the children led out the team onto the pitch as mascots. Manchester United said in a statement: "Matthew was a proud Red, a devoted family man and a police officer who dedicated his life to helping others. "For Matt, some of his happiest times were spent watching United with his boys." On Saturday, Middlesbrough paid tribute to the pair and other Cleveland Police officers, holding a minute's silence before their match with West Bromich Albion. Manchester United also published a tribute from an unnamed friend and colleague of PC Blades in their programme on Sunday. It read: "For Matthew, United was a lifelong love, a passion he shared with his family. "Since Matt's tragic death there has been an extraordinary outpouring of grief and support. That love has been seen in countless tributes and acts of kindness. "Today, we remember a fellow Red. A husband. A father. A son. A brother. A friend. A police officer. A man who gave his life in the service of others. Forever our superhero."

The executives, who asked not to be named, also noted that while casting the duchess might generate interest, it would also be "risky". Harry and Meghan landed in the UK this week - just days after announcing they would relocate to the country with their children Archie and Lilibet. The couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and went to live in California. The surprise announcement sparked speculation - and the duchess was said to have had talks about a role in season three of Guy Ritchie's Netflix hit, The Gentlemen. As for whether Meghan could join the cast of the show, they added: "I think the producers have said, 'There's a part for two episodes, let's look into that' - but then decided, 'reverse, reverse, the publicity is terrible'. "I doubt the producers or Netflix are enjoying this kind of attention." Another told us that if she was cast, "I don't think people would stop watching because she is in it. They have a fanbase already and there is the possibility that Meghan could add some audience." The insiders agree the duchess would "attract publicity", which could generate "higher ratings" for shows. But casting her would come with its own set of problems, too, the industry insiders have told us. "You need actors who inhabit roles and are believable. How do you get over the fact she's a duchess?" said one. "I don't think Meghan would get a project greenlit just with her attached because, despite her being quite famous, it's quite an unknown, and she is divisive." "Imagine the security we would need on set," said another TV insider. When she married Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan ended her acting career to focus on her charitable causes and royal duties. She rose to fame on the screen playing paralegal Rachel Zane in the show Suits for seven series. Together, Harry and Meghan signed multi-million-pound deals with Spotify for a podcast series and with Netflix for programmes including the duchess's lifestyle show With Love, Meghan. There is little precedent for women who marry into the Royal Family returning to their careers. When Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, married Prince Edward, she gave up her job working in PR. "It will be hard for Meghan to find the right roles. She's had success, and she's a good actress," another executive said. "But she's not Grace Kelly, who was a world-famous actress who became a princess."

Sir James - who has served as shadow housing secretary since July 2025 - revealed on Saturday that he had told Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch of his decision to stand down. Writing for The Sunday Times, he said: "We need a credible big hitter putting themselves forward for Mayor of London." He added: "I have told Kemi Badenoch that I will leave the shadow cabinet. Serving there has been a privilege, and I know there will continue to be strong voices around that table. In a post on X, he said: "London needs more than an administrator. It needs a champion, someone who understands its potential and is prepared to fight for its future. "That's why I'm running to be the Conservative Candidate for London Mayor." Sadiq Khan has served as mayor of London since 2016 and is yet to confirm whether he will run for a fourth term. A topsy-turvy opening set went Norris' way but his performance suddenly dipped early in the second set and he was never able to recover as Van Assche gained confidence in the long baseline rallies. Police were called to an address in the Wincobank area of Sheffield just before 6am on Sunday over concerns for the safety of a newborn. Officers searched a property on Holywell Heights, where the baby was found. The infant was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the best efforts of officers and paramedics, South Yorkshire Police said. Cullen, who gave voice to Eeyore and Optimus Prime in numerous TV shows and films, died surrounded by his family. The Canadian actor also voiced the titular character in the 1987 Predator movie. A family statement issued by his agent read: "Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family - and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide. "His family asks that you honour his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember, be strong enough to be gentle." Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the 1980s TV show The Transformers and its spin-off film The Transformers: The Movie (1986). He reprised the role in 2007 in the first live action film of the series directed by Michael Bay. He went on to appear as the shapeshifting truck robot in Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), Bumblebee (2018), and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023), as well as numerous other TV projects. A survey carried out by YouGov pollsters showed 50% favoured the measure. Only a minority (16%) of the 6,142 people surveyed on Wednesday opposed an embargo, while 34% did not know. While backing for a ban was strongest among Labour, Lib Dem and Green voters, the policy had cross-party support. The majority of surveyed Conservative and Reform voters said they "strongly support" a prohibition. About a third of the governing Labour party MPs (140) in June had signed a letter calling for an Israeli settlement trade ban. The government confirmed in July it was working towards a ban on imports and exports to illegal Israeli settlements. Both services and goods will be prohibited from flowing to and from the outposts, the trade minister at the time, Sir Chris Bryant, told MPs of the Business and Trade Committee. The policy will be announced in September, according to reporting in The Times and Middle East Eye. How would it work? Exactly how a ban is implemented is unclear but the current sanctions regime could be used, Sir Chris told the committee last month. Another difficulty arises from identifying where goods come from. "We all know perfectly well that it's very difficult to enforce [customs rules] because [Palestinian] territories and the settlement areas and, and the rest of Israel... goods travel in and out very easily, both heavy machinery and foodstuffs and so on," Sir Chris said. Also considered by the UK government, though ultimately rejected, was pausing its trade agreement with Israel. The Department for Business and Trade undertook an impact assessment on suspending the UK-Israel Trade Partnership Agreement, the 2019 post-Brexit continuity arrangement through which Israeli imports mostly enter the UK tariff-free. Attempts to access the impact assessment have been denied by the department, in part, on international relations grounds. "Disclosing the information would be likely to prejudice the UK's relationship with Israel," the department told Sky News. What are settlements? Israeli settlements, in areas like the West Bank, have long been opposed by the UK government, which believes them to be a breach of international law and a threat to a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Settlements have rapidly expanded in recent years, with more planned by the Israeli government. Palestinians face increasing attacks and, in the past weeks, have had homes besieged. Creating settlements can involve confiscating land and displacing Palestinians, which is illegal under the Geneva Convention, as is the moving of Israeli civilians into territory Israel occupies. Israel disputes this, saying it cannot be classed as an occupying power, as no country owned the land before it took the territory in 1967, and it has not transferred its population to the territories; people move freely.

Ben Duckett - 4 Batting: 17 and 1 A forgettable Test which saw the England opener face only 26 deliveries across his two innings. He was one of a number of batters who perhaps felt a touch unfortunate to be given out lbw in the first innings to deliveries that, at first glance, looked to be going over the stumps, only to be shown otherwise after a timely Pakistan review. His second-innings failure, however, simply owed to a poor shot as he chipped one straight to mid-off. Emilio Gay - 5 Batting: 8 and 31 It's a cruel game. Gay can count himself unfortunate in both innings, with Mohammad Rizwan claiming a terrific diving grab off little more than a leg-side strangle in the first innings, before a devastating grubber did for him lbw when batting was at its toughest on a rain-interrupted third day. He'd batted determinedly through to stumps on the second evening, a quality that has been evident since making his debut this summer, but his place in the side is coming under increasing scrutiny with Jacob Bethell still to return after this series and others staking a claim. Jordan Cox - 7 Batting: 55 and 11 Cox is one such player pushing for a permanent spot in the side as he registered a second fifty in as many Tests since his reintroduction in place of the injured Bethell at No 3. Speaking to Sky Sports Cricket ahead of the Lord's Test, Cox said of the opportunity handed to him: "This could be your only shot, make sure this counts". He's come close to doing just that, looking very assured out in the middle, just as he did at Headingley. A century once again eluded him - this time thanks to an absolute screamer of a catch from Salman Ali Agha, one of the best slip catches you're ever likely to see. Joe Root - 4 Batting: 4 and 24 Does Root have an lbw problem? "It's fascinating that even a guy of more than 160 Tests, who averages over 50 - one of the greatest players England have ever produced - teams will still be looking at that developing trend," Sky Sports' Michael Atherton said as the skipper fell leg before wicket in both innings, making it seven such dismissals this summer and nine times in his last 12 Test innings'. He's far from the only batter to succumb in such fashion this summer, with lbw dismissals on the rise as a whole in seamer-friendly conditions, but it's certainly something he'll be eager to correct with a big score in the final Test at Edgbaston. Harry Brook - 5 Batting: 15 and 34 Brook batted better than his run haul would suggest, particularly in the second innings where he cautiously negotiated a testing period on the second evening, before building a promising partnership with Dan Lawrence on day three - with conditions at their toughest. Just as in the first innings, though, when bowled by a devastating Mohammad Ali in-ducker, one eventually had his name on it when grazing a faint shoulder edge to Rizwan, stood up to the stumps, off Mohammad Abbas. Has caught pretty consistently in the slips all summer, but put down Azan Awais on eight as he went on to score 46 in the first innings. Dan Lawrence - 7 Batting: 17 and 54 Lawrence is another staking his claim for a permanent place in the side, with the No 6 position seemingly suiting him perfectly as England look to fill the Ben Stokes-shaped hole left behind. While Lawrence could never hope to match Stokes' repeated and ridiculous feats of the past decade and more, he provides similar counter-attacking verve with the bat - which was on full display with his second-innings half century in testing conditions. He also helps balance the side with his part-time off-spin to complement England's four-pronged pace attack, which we've admittedly yet to see a lot of. Jamie Smith - 8 Batting: 61 and 7 There was a welcome return to form with the bat, too for Smith, as he tonked 61 off 80 deliveries in the first innings, featuring 10 boundaries. It's precisely the sort of attacking prowess for which he made his name as he took to Test cricket like a dream in his first 18 months, only for it to then draw criticism as the runs dried up during a dismal Ashes drubbing, admitting to Sky Sports Cricket this week that "I have found it tough". His impeccable keeping, particularly when stood up to the stumps, earns him an extra mark. Gus Atkinson - 6 Bowling: 0-33 and 0-41Batting: 45 and 7 Atkinson is the one to feel the pinch of England's four-pronged pace attack at the moment, being reduced to second change and rarely being afforded the end he wants to bowl from. There simply aren't enough wickets to spread around, given Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer's success with the new ball and Josh Tongue's taste for the tail. Atkinson is certainly not bowling poorly, with a pacey spell prior to tea on the fourth afternoon a particular standout, but he's just bagged the one wicket so far in the series and will be eager to cash in at Edgbaston. His batting was a positive, enjoying himself again at Lord's - the scene of his Test hundred - as he cracked 45 in the first innings. Ollie Robinson - 9 Bowling: 4-11 and 4-24Batting: 0 and 8 That's three Test matches played this summer and three Player of the Match awards secured. Just let some of these numbers wash over you... Robinson returned astonishing match figures of 8-35 across his 27 overs of supremely skilful bowling. He now has 99 wickets in 23 Tests played, at an average of 19.53! And that average only improves to 15.45 for his five career Tests at Lord's, and an astonishing 8.34 for his three appearances this summer. "There will be more questions asked of Robinson, on difficult pitches to bowl seam up on - his fitness will have to come into play - but in these conditions, at the moment he's England's best bowler," Sky Sports Cricket's Nasser Hussain said post-match. "For someone who was left out of the side for quite some time, to suddenly come back and be England's best bowler is some achievement. You've got to take your hat off to him. "He now has to ask himself, the backroom staff, and people like Stuart Broad and James Anderson, 'what do I need to do to become the complete bowler?' That's how you grow as a player and a team." Jofra Archer - 8 Bowling: 3-26 and 2-73Batting: 14 and 2no Deserved more than just a five-wicket haul from the match, particularly in the first innings where he could and perhaps should have taken that many alone. According to CricViz, Archer's opening spell averaged 90.7 mph, with the odd delivery touching 94mph, as he picked up the flat-footed Shan Masood caught behind. He repeatedly threatened both edges of the bat thereafter but without reward - Azan playing and missing as many as 14 times to the quick - until returning to dismantle the tail late on. He also saw off Babar Azam with a brute of bouncer in the second innings as he and Robinson reduced Pakistan to 14-3 as part of another devastating new-ball spell. Josh Tongue - 7 Bowling: 2-27 and 3-46Batting: 30no and 12 Tongue got Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam nicking off either side of lunch on day two, before feasting on the tail once more in the second innings. He had also successfully set the trap for Saud Shakeel, who happily hooked into it, falling three runs short of a well-deserved hundred. He continues to prove his worth as part of this attack, albeit he does leak runs - particularly when bowling to left-handers, which will need to be addressed - as he went at over five an over for his 14.5 overs bowled. He smacked a few to the fence himself at No 11, part of an impressive 47-run final-wicket partnership in the first innings as he and Atkinson had some fun on the second morning.
