Parents and carers across West Sussex can now apply for primary and infant school places for children starting in September 2026.

Applications are open for children born between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022, and the deadline to apply is 15 January 2026.

The quickest and easiest way to apply is online via the West Sussex County Council website.

Children currently in Year 2 at an infant school will also need to apply for a junior school place for next September.

Families are being urged to apply before the deadline to give themselves the best chance of getting one of their three preferred schools.

Those who apply late are far less likely to be offered a preferred place.

Cllr Jacquie Russell, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Learning, said:

“Supporting individuals and communities to thrive remains a central focus of our Council Plan, and schools are vital in helping us achieve that goal.
"I encourage families to explore all available information, visit school websites, and take advantage of open days before submitting their preferences.”

Free computer access is available at all West Sussex libraries for families who don’t have internet access.

Those unable to apply online can request a paper form by calling 033 301 42903.

Parents and carers are reminded to:

  • List three schools in order of preference

  • Include their catchment school if they want it considered

  • Apply before 15 January 2026 to avoid missing out on preferred choices

Applications for secondary school places for September 2026 are also open.

The deadline for those applications is 31 October 2025, and details are available via the Secondary School Places page.
