From today (Monday) Brighton will expand weekly food waste collections to 73,000 homes across the city.

The new service will cover central Brighton, Hanover, Kemptown, Queen’s Park, Roundhill, Seven Dials, and Whitehawk. The council has invested £1.2 million in the rollout.

Tim Rowkins, cabinet member for net zero and environmental services, said the phased approach allows the council “to learn from and build on the successes of each area.”

Since the scheme began, food waste collected has grown from six tonnes in the first week to over 1,000 tonnes across three areas by 20 February.

The council has installed 600 communal on-street bins and containers for flats, ready for use this month. Collected food waste will be turned into compost and soil improver, helping to grow more food.

Residents can now put all cooked and uncooked food waste into their caddies, including bread, pasta, rice, fruit and vegetables, fish, meat and bones, dairy, tea bags, and coffee grounds.

Blocks of flats will use shared communal food waste bins, while households with on-street collections will use locally provided bins.
