Calls Grow To Bring Closed Newhaven Beach Into Public Ownership After Break-Ins During Heatwave

Calls are growing for a long-closed East Sussex beach to be brought into public ownership after two reported break-ins during the recent spell of hot weather.

West Beach in Newhaven has been closed to the public since 2008 and remains under private ownership, ultimately belonging to a French company.

However, frustration over the continued closure appears to have boiled over as temperatures soared across the South East.

Sussex Police received reports of padlocks being broken to gain access to the beach on both Sunday and Monday.

Newhaven Port Authority, which manages the site, said the area remains closed due to safety concerns.

A spokesperson said access to the beach continues to be restricted because of the dangers present at the site and urged people to respect the security measures in place.

Lewes MP James MacCleary has renewed calls for a solution that would allow public access to the beach, describing the current situation as frustrating for local residents.

He said many people in the area want access to the only sandy beach locally, particularly during periods of hot weather when families are looking for places to cool off.

While stressing that he does not support unlawful entry, Mr MacCleary said he understands why residents are becoming increasingly frustrated and has called on Newhaven Port Authority to work with stakeholders to find a practical solution.

The Liberal Democrat MP also said he believes the beach should ultimately be brought into public ownership.

Local resident Emma Bransbury said she remembers spending summers at West Beach when it was open, describing it as a popular destination with a café, amusements and a lively atmosphere.

She said its closure has been a significant loss for the town.

A petition calling for the reopening of West Beach has now been launched, while Lewes District Council leader Zoe Nicholson said the authority supports efforts to bring the beach back into public ownership.

Meanwhile, Sussex Police say enquiries are ongoing into the reported break-ins and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

West Beach has remained closed since 2008, despite years of campaigning from residents and local politicians who want to see public access restored.
