Legionella bacteria has been cleared from a new multi-million-pound health centre in Worthing, but the building still cannot open due to ongoing issues.
The Worthing Integrated Care Centre was originally due to open in January last year.
However, the bacteria — which can cause the potentially fatal Legionnaires’ disease — was discovered during testing of the heating system.
The project’s budget has since risen to £45 million.
Worthing Borough Council says it will not accept handover of the building until it is fully compliant, safe and operational, allowing NHS services to move in.
Contractor Galliford Try is continuing to address a number of outstanding issues, including work on the water system.
While tests have confirmed the legionella has now been eliminated, the water system remains under the contractor’s control until all works are completed, independently checked and formally signed off.
The council says adjustments are needed to ensure both hot and cold water temperatures remain within safe limits.
Work is ongoing between the council, the contractor and NHS partners to agree a timeline for opening, although this will depend on final testing and documentation being completed.
The centre is set to be the first of its kind in Sussex, bringing a range of NHS services together under one roof to improve access to care.
