Southwater Community Police Volunteers Mark 30 Years

Volunteers who have helped run Southwater’s Community Police Office for 30 years have been recognised at a special awards ceremony.

The office was established in 1996 after the closure of a former police house in the village.

Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator Karen Haynes set up the volunteer-run service, initially attracting 14 people after advertising locally.

David Scott was among the original volunteers and continues to serve as the office manager, having now given 30 years to the scheme.

The office received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2006 and the Lord Ferrers Award for Police Support Team of the Year in 2023.

At a ceremony on Friday 18 September, Chief Constable awards were presented to David Scott, Anthony Biggs, Esther Clark, Nancy Brock and founder Karen Haynes.

Certificates of Recognition were also presented to a further 12 volunteers, with two others unable to attend.

The event was attended by senior figures including Assistant Chief Constable Rosie Ross and Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne.

Police say the current volunteer team has collectively contributed more than 190 years of service, providing a local point of contact for residents seeking advice, reporting concerns or accessing support.
